Understanding Global Play

How do players spend their time with mobile gaming in different regions?

We often think of video game players as concentrated in specific regions of the world, but video games are enticing worldwide. Despite this global interest, there are trends and patterns in different countries and territories in how players engage with mobile gaming. Below is a brief overview of some of the patterns that we see in different places based on player behaviors.

Global Play is Surprisingly Varied

Despite assumptions about global mobile gaming falling into two groups – high engagement in East Asian countries and territories, with less overall engagement elsewhere – there is a wide range of behaviors and engagement across the globe. The takeaway is that there is a broad and diverse mobile gaming market to tap into.

So What Does This Mean?

Gaming is known to be global, but the exact dynamics have been less clear. There is a clear range of behaviors and engagement with mobile gaming on a global scale, with players in different places dedicating different amounts of daily and yearly time to this hobby. Some places feature players who uniformly spend a great deal of time on mobile games or players who are generally disengaged from mobile gaming. In other cases, playtimes are unevenly distributed, with some players spending much more time than others within a country or territory. This is an important first step toward understanding global player dynamics that can help improve mobile game development and marketing.
